Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh

Description

Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh, an Orthodox Jewish congregation, dedicated a new ark of covenant at its synagogue on Newbury Street.

Jacob Citrin designed the ark and supervised its construction at F. O. Bailey Co., Inc.

The vestry was rewired, painted and paneled in light colors to contrast with the dark mahogany ark and surrounding appointments.

Rabbi Morris Bekritsky wrote on the program, "The Ark has always been the focal point of the Jewish religion. It is the repository of our holiest possession, the Sefer Torah."

Less than a decade later, the congregation built a new synagogue on Noyes Street. The ark was taken to a synagogue in Lexington, Massachusetts, when the Newbury Street building was sold in the 1970s.
