Description

The constitution and bylaws of Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh in Portland were adopted on Nov. 13, 1904 when two of three existing Orthodox congregations in Portland -- Shaarith Israel and Beth Hamidrash Hagadol -- came together.

The Orthodox synagogue was chartered May 28, 1900. It was located at 149 Newbury Street in Portland and served a congregation primarily of immigrants. Many of the original documents are written in Yiddish.

The officers of the original congregation were Barnard D. Shalit, president; Benjamin Snider, vice president; Samuel Rosenberg, treasurer; and Nathan Stein, secretary.
